When people think of a water polo club, they usually picture the action in the water: the goals, the grueling swim sets, and the competitive matches.
At Morley Water Polo Club, we are incredibly proud of our athletes and our competitive history. However, there is another story—one that often goes untold—about the infrastructure, the dedication, and the sheer volume of volunteer hours that keep the sport alive in our region.
We don't just play the game; in many ways, we enable it.
The 90% Statistic
It is a staggering figure, but it is the reality of our current landscape: Morley Water Polo supplies the referees for roughly 90% of all local league games.
Let that sink in for a moment. If you head to a pool anywhere in the local league this weekend, there is a near-certainty that the person blowing the whistle, managing the game clock, or ensuring fair play is wearing a Morley badge. Without this contribution, the local leagues simply wouldn't function. We have accepted the responsibility of being the stewards of the sport, ensuring that fixtures are fulfilled and that players from all clubs have a game to go to.
From Grassroots to the Global Stage
Our impact isn't limited to local matches. We are a conveyor belt for officiating and coaching talent that feeds into the highest levels of British water polo.
National & International: We consistently provide officials to the National League. Our legacy includes numerous international officials who have represented our club and country at the highest level.
Regional Development: We supply coaches and team managers to the Regional Academies, shaping the next generation of elite talent.
Governance: Our members hold senior roles within the main competitions in the region, helping to organize and govern the sport.
Some would argue—and we would agree—that the sport in Yorkshire could not function without the officers and officials of Morley Waterpolo Club.
A Critical Time for Yorkshire Water Polo
We take these responsibilities seriously because we are acutely aware of the fragility of the sport we love.
Years ago, there were over 30 teams competing across Yorkshire. Today, we are down to less than a third of that number. As clubs struggle to survive, the pool of volunteers shrinks, putting the entire ecosystem at risk.
At Morley, we refuse to let the sport dwindle. We produce more referees, table officials, and coaches than any other club in the region. We do this not just for our own benefit, but to ensure there is a future for water polo in the North of England. We view our ability to train officials as a service to the wider community—a way to stop the decline and build a foundation for growth.
Creating Value Beyond the Pool
Our commitment creates incredible social value. By training young members to become referees and table officials, we are teaching responsibility, decision-making, and conflict resolution. We are creating a community of volunteers who understand that sport is about more than just winning; it’s about contribution.
We are incredibly proud to be a pillar of the local community in Morley and a lifeline for the region of Yorkshire. We will continue to train, referee, coach, and organize because we believe in the power of this sport, and we are dedicated to seeing it thrive again.
